In the beginning stages of an oil painting, an artist often paints the canvas one solid color. This is called underpainting. If painting a landscape, the artist may choose an earth tone. However, some artists choose to paint the canvas a color that does not play a large role in the final composititon. Take a walk around the museum pausing to look at the paintings. Do you see any places where the underpainting shows through?
