One legend of coffee’s origins:

An Ethiopian goatherd noticed his flock became particularly frisky after eating the brownish-purple cherries from a coffee tree. The goatherd tried the cherries himself, and noting their stimulating effect, gave some to a local imam. The imam prepared the berries into a hot drink that he used to stay awake during overnight religious rituals.
