Novelist Herman Melville often described characters by associating them with famous people from the Bible or mythology. Like Melville, try describing characters in paintings using allusions to popular modern fictional characters. For example, “The subject of ‘Portrait of a Gentleman 1540-1550, Italian,’ has an aquiline nose like Sherlock Holmes, thereby seeming to possess him with a similar sense of intellect.”
